Early Life of Mirabai Chanu

Mirabai Chanu was born on 8 August 1994 in Imphal, Manipur. He was born in the small village of Nongpok Kakching in Manipur. There is definitely something in the soil of Manipur that makes every game important but there is at least one player in every household. 

Manipur has all the facilities but Mirabai’s village is 22 kilometres away from Manipur. Despite the importance of sports in Manipur, Manipur is also at the forefront in crime. So their journey was not easy. He faced all such difficulties and started training.

He started weightlifting in 2007 at the age of 14. His role model is Kunjarani Devi, India’s first weightlifter. Mirabai was inspired by watching one of his documentaries.

Mirabai Chanu started getting her initial training from her home. Whenever Mirabai wanted to make a meal at home, she would go to fetch firewood for it.

He had a good interest in housework. Mirabai used to bring several bundles of wood at a time to fetch firewood. This is the beginning! Heavy loads of wood were easily brought from the mountains.

The villagers used to ask them, “How do you get this?” Because it was not possible for others at that age to carry such a heavy load of wood. His schooling took place in Manipur. 

They had to go three times a day for training. The distance from the training center to the house was 22 kilometers every day. Going further, she came to Delhi and took training in good facilities. There they got good coaches, they recognized the talent in Mirabai and also gave them the right guidance.

Mirabai Chanu Games and Medals

Mirabai also won gold medals at the 2011 South Asian Junior Games and the International Junior Championships. At just 23 years old, Mirabai won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. 

In it, she was playing in the 48 kg category. At the Rio Olympics, their hard work paid off. They failed in that Olympics. But then his coach and he started training so that he didn’t even go to his own sister’s wedding.

Everyone expected from Mirabai so the coaches were also giving their lives to give her the right training. 

Weightlifting has two sections, Snatch and Clean and Jerk. The snatch is meant to be lifted straight up without leading to the neck without turning the hand. In the clean and jerk he lifts the rod and brings it close to his shoulder. 

He did not succeed at the Rio Olympics but went on to win medals at the Commonwealth Games, as well as gold medals at the Asian Championships and World Championships.

Mirabai won the 2016 South Asian Games. In 2017, at the World Weightlifting Championships where India had not won a single medal in 22 years, he won the gold medal in the 48 kg weight class by lifting 85 kg snatch and 109 kg clean and jerk (194 kg). 

Following this achievement, Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh presented the Manipur diamond with a check for Rs 20 lakh to Mirabai. In 2018, Mirabai Chanu was awarded the Padma Shri. 

Once again at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, lifting a total weight of 196 kg (86 kg in snatch and 110 kg in clean and jerk) again won the gold medal. In 2019, he won a bronze medal at the World Weightlifting Championships. In it, he lifted 199 kg, setting a new record of his own.

Mirabai Chanu once said in an interview that her favorite actor is Salman Khan and whenever she gets stressed, she closes herself in a room and dances a lot. 

Chanu has won a silver medal in women’s 49kg weightlifting at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In this form, China’s Jihui has carved a name on gold. Indonesia’s Windy Kantika has won a bronze medal. 

Chanu lifted 87kg in the snatch event and 115kg in the clean and jerk. That means Mirabai Chanu lifted a total weight of 202 kg and also broke her old records.
